Intelligent crows
17 August 2007 - In a study by a team of Oxford University researchers led by Alex Kacelnik, seven New Caledonian crows were observed using three different tools in the correct sequence to retrieve food from a tube. The scientists had inserted the food into small tubes with only one opening. The only way the crows could remove the food was by using a special tool. However, to access this tool, the birds needed to use two other tools first. The crows easily mastered this task, some of them even on the first attempt, without any prior experience. The choice and the sequential use of the tools showed that the crows proceeded purposefully. Such complex behavior is normally an indicator of human-like intelligence.
